Neither the oldest, nor the youngest, Valentina was allowed some marked freedom to explore things that were well outside the families more bank-based pursuits. She picked up the sword one day, and decided that she prefered it to sums and numbers. She wasn't allowed to entirely escape sums and things, though, but she was allowed the freedom to explore elsewhere as well.

She showed a true talent for it, and began training more extensively with the families guards and horsemen, spending a fair amount of her time in that part of things than she did in others. As she got older she was able to take on more leadership roles within the family militia, showing both a physical talent but also a mental one as well, and the fierce and bloody loyalty to her family that stood her apart from the other paid for militia.
