Aleksandr is one among a larger tradition of northmen and Sumrovians who have traveled south, first on trading excursions and raids, but increasingly to serve in the entourages of southern nobles as mercenaries. Renowned for their fierceness and loyalty (or at least, disinterest in local politics), the Emperors themselves established such retinues, which Aleksandr's father entered into, bringing along his son who was then barely more than a boy - but man enough by Sumrov custom.

By contrast to his father, Aleksandr lived more of his life within the Eastern courts than without. While his father became a commander among the Emperor's guard, Aleksandr was eventually granted the minor courtly title of kavallarios, the equivalent of a Western knight. He fought on the Eastern Empire's behalf against the Kataro in a number of battles, and envisioned perhaps that he would go on to marry a local woman and establish himself in this strange land.

Yet the vicious politics of the Eastern Empire are not infamous without cause, nor elite foreign bodyguards hired without purpose. After several violent attempts (one which took his father's life), the Emperor died to illness (or poison), and seeing less friendly factions of the court taking power, Aleksandr fled with the wealth he had acquired in his service. His travels brought him through various wartorn lands but eventually to the Matoran Duchy of Pelcortia. After being well received there, he joined the Wyvern company to support himself.
